The nation mourns the irreparable loss of Major (Retd) Maroof Raza, one of India’s most respected defence analysts and strategic affairs experts, who passed away on 26 February 2026 in Gurugram after a courageous battle with cancer and a severe lung infection. He was 67.

Commissioned into The Grenadiers regiment of the Indian Army in 1980, Major Raza served the nation with honour, including counter-insurgency operations in the North-East and as an instructor at the prestigious Indian Military Academy (IMA). After his distinguished military career, he pursued advanced studies in war and international relations at King’s College London and the University of Cambridge, enriching India’s strategic discourse with global academic depth.

“The demise of Major (Retd.) Maroof Raza is not merely the loss of a defence analyst, but the passing of a patriotic intellectual who strengthened India’s democratic discourse through informed strategic dialogue.

His life symbolised discipline, scholarship, national security awareness, and unwavering commitment to truth. He bridged the gap between the armed forces and civil society, ensuring that every citizen understood the sacrifices and challenges faced by our defence forces.
