Two College Students Found Dead in Surat Temple Washroom; Elon Musk Reacts to Report on AI Search History

New Delhi / Surat | March 9, 2026

According to a report by NDTV, a tragic incident in Surat has sparked nationwide discussion on mental health and the role of digital platforms. Two young college students, aged between 18 and 20 years, were found dead inside the washroom of a temple after allegedly injecting anaesthetic drugs.

Police investigations revealed that the two friends had gone missing earlier in the day after leaving their homes for college. Concerned family members approached the police when the students failed to return by afternoon.

Using mobile phone tracking, investigators traced their location to the Swaminarayan Temple, where a scooter belonging to one of the students was found parked outside the premises. CCTV footage showed the two students entering the temple washroom area, after which they were not seen exiting.

Later, authorities discovered their bodies inside the washroom.

Assistant Commissioner of Police N. P. Gohil stated that bottles of anaesthetic substances and syringes were recovered from the scene. Police further disclosed that after examining the students’ mobile phones, investigators found search history indicating that they had looked for information related to drugs that could be used for suicide on ChatGPT.

Authorities also discovered a screenshot of a news article in the phone gallery describing a case where a person reportedly used anaesthetic injection for suicide. Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination and forensic analysis while continuing investigations to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.

The report gained international attention after technology entrepreneur Elon Musk reacted on social media platform X with a one-word response, “Yikes.” Musk has been a known critic of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and has frequently promoted Grok as an alternative AI system.

The incident has triggered broader discussions about youth mental health, responsible use of artificial intelligence, and the safeguards required for digital platforms.

Police officials in Surat have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and all possible angles are being examined.
