Human Rights Council stands with Baha’i community in Iran, particularly the alarming reports surrounding the case of Peyvand Naimi.

I extend my sincere regards and acknowledge receipt of your communication concerning the deeply troubling situation of the Baha’i community in Iran, particularly the alarming reports surrounding the case of Peyvand Naimi.

At the outset, I wish to place on record my unequivocal condemnation of any form of persecution, discrimination, or coercion inflicted upon individuals or communities on the basis of their faith or belief. The reported arbitrary arrests, denial of due process, and use of psychological and physical coercion are not merely violations of domestic legal norms but strike at the very foundation of universally recognised human rights and the rule of law.

The targeting of the Baha’i community, especially during times of heightened national sensitivity, raises grave concerns under international human rights jurisprudence. Such actions are inconsistent with the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including the right to freedom of religion, dignity, liberty, and protection against torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

As an Advocate of the Supreme Court of India and Chairman of the All India Council of Human Rights, Liberties and Social Justice, and Global Chairman of the Global Peace Council and Global Interfaith Council for Peace and Human Rights, I firmly believe that the legal fraternity has not only a professional obligation but also a moral duty to speak against injustice wherever it occurs. Silence in the face of such violations would amount to a disservice to the cause of justice and humanity.

We have consistently raised our voice on grave humanitarian crises across the globe, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The loss of innocent lives, particularly the reported killing of 166 young girl students in a school during the course of this conflict, reflects the devastating human cost of war and underscores the urgent need for global accountability, restraint, and protection of civilians.

I, therefore, extend my full support to the joint statement issued by members of the legal fraternity in India. I stand in solidarity with the Baha’i community and all those who are subjected to systemic oppression and denial of their fundamental rights. It is imperative that the international community, human rights organizations, and legal institutions collectively call for accountability, transparency, and adherence to due process.

I urge the concerned authorities to ensure the immediate cessation of such practices, to uphold the rule of law, and to guarantee the protection of fundamental human rights of all individuals, irrespective of their religious or social identity.
