Global Human Rights Appeal for De-Escalation and Accountability in the Iran Conflict

The escalating hostilities involving Iran and other global powers have raised profound concerns within the international human rights community. The recent appeal by United Nations human rights experts for immediate de-escalation and accountability underscores the grave danger posed by the intensifying conflict.

Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate, Supreme Court of India, and Chairman of the All India Council of Human Rights, Liberties and Social Justice (AICHLS), expressed deep concern over the rising violence and its devastating humanitarian consequences. He emphasized that the protection of civilian lives must remain the foremost priority under international humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter.

According to Dr. Raju, the principles governing international law are unequivocal: the use of force must strictly comply with the doctrines of necessity, proportionality, and legality. Any attack that results in the loss of innocent civilian lives, especially children, schools, hospitals, and other protected civilian infrastructure, demands immediate and impartial investigation to determine responsibility and ensure justice.

The call by United Nations experts for accountability is both timely and essential. In situations of armed conflict, the international community must uphold the rule of law and ensure that violations of international humanitarian law are neither ignored nor justified under any circumstances. Failure to do so risks weakening the very foundations of global peace, justice, and human dignity.

Dr. Raju further emphasized that sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international legal frameworks. Military escalation only deepens humanitarian suffering and destabilizes regions already facing complex geopolitical tensions.

The All India Council of Human Rights, Liberties and Social Justice strongly supports the call for immediate restraint, transparent investigations into alleged violations, and renewed diplomatic engagement to prevent further loss of life.

At this critical juncture, the global community must unite to reaffirm its commitment to human rights, international law, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
